Tartan Army WILL get to cheer heroes at the Euros

- By John Paul Breslin

FOOTBALL fans will be allowed to attend Scotland’s Euro 2020 games at Hampden this summer.

Nicola Sturgeon said she is ‘delighted’ the Scottish Government has given approval for 12,000 people to be in the stadium – 25 per cent of its capacity.

A final decision from UEFA on the plan is expected to come tomorrow.

Miss Sturgeon previously suggested there would be a ‘reasonably good number’ of fans in Hampden.

Scotland are due to play the Czech Republic on June 14 and Croatia eight days later.

Miss Sturgeon said: ‘I’m delighted we have been able to confirm that, thanks to Scotland’s progress in suppressing Covid-19, 12,000 spectators will be able to attend Hampden for the four Euro 2020 games.

‘This is a significant moment which celebrates just how far Scotland has come in tackling the pandemic.

‘Allowing fans to come together to watch Scotland play at our national stadium is a huge milestone, thanks to the dedication of fans sticking to the public health guidance.

‘The restrictions have been really difficult for everyone but I am looking forward to joining the Tartan Army in cheering on Scotland in June at Hampden Park.

‘The country has delivered for the fans – now it’s all eyes on the team to deliver the results.’

European football’s governing body had asked the 12 host cities, including Glasgow, Dublin and London, for their proposals on how many supporters they expected to be able to host by yesterday. There is no date set for fans to return in Scotland but the SFA, with the Scottish Government, put together a proposal that will allow the national stadium to be at 25 per cent capacity for three group games and a knockout match. A statement from the SFA and Glasgow Life stated fan attendance at Hampden would be ‘subject to continued progress with reducing the prevalence of the virus and the rollout of the vaccination programme’. Meanwhile, Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross has insisted Hampden could host the World Cup final in 2030, if the UK wins the bid to hold the tournament. He said: ‘Hampden has shown it can host major international events in the past.’
