ANTONIO KEEPS HAMMERS’ HOPES ALIVE

BURNLEY 1 WEST HAM 2

- CHRIS WHEELER at Turf Moor

MICHAIL ANTONIO’S quickfire double secured a dramatic fightback at Turf Moor last night to keep West ham’s Champions League dream alive. Victory moved David Moyes’ men above Tottenham into fifth and within three points of fourth-placed Chelsea, but they had to come from behind after Chris Wood converted a 19th-minute penalty for Burnley. Issa Diop had failed to cut out Ashley Westwood’s lobbed pass to Wood and, when the striker cut back in towards goal, he was fouled by Tomas Soucek. The New Zealander scored from 12 yards, but the hammers needed only two minutes to reply. Antonio, making his first appearance for a month, got in between Ben Mee and James Tarkowski to meet Vladimir Coufal’s cross after Dwight McNeil lost possession. And Antonio then put Moyes’ side in front with 29 minutes gone as he ghosted through the Burnley defence to apply the finishing touch to Said Benrahma’s curling cross. ‘We rode our luck at the end but we should have been out of sight,’ admitted Moyes. ‘I’d love to be in europe. It would be an incredible achievement. ‘We’re not far away from the Champions League positions. We’ve got to keep believing.’ relishing the prospect of a crack at europe’s elite, two-goal hero Antonio said: ‘It would be unbelievable. everybody wants to play in the Champions League. ‘I have been here a few years and there have been so many seasons we were fighting to stay in the league and now we have the opportunity for top four.’ Burnley’s defeat kept West Brom and Fulham’s slender survival hopes alive, with boss Sean Dyche saying of West ham: ‘They are chasing Champions League football and looked like it. ‘They have pace and play good on the transition.’
