Full steam ahead for the sequel!

50 years after original Railway Children it’s...

IT is a delay that can’t be explained by leaves on the line or points failure at Haworth. For, more than 50 years on, The Railway Children is to get a sequel.

And like the much-loved 1970 film, it will star Jenny Agutter. The Call The Midwife actress, 68, will reprise her role as Roberta ‘Bobbie’ Waterbury, who in the original famously used her red petticoats to flag down a train, saving a boy’s life.

That film was set in 1905. The sequel, The Railway Children Return, is about a group of youngsters evacuated to Yorkshire during the Second World War.

Sheridan Smith and Sir Tom Courtenay will star alongside Miss Agutter, who was a teenager when the original was made. Filming begins on Monday, again featuring the steam trains of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, as well as locations such as Oakworth Station and the Bronte Parsonage at Haworth.

It is due for release in UK cinemas next April.
