Frankie rolls back years at Chester

- MARCUS TOWNEND

FRANKIE DETTORI bided his time before launching a sizzling late charge on Falcon Eight to win a second Chester Cup 30 years after he first won the race. Dettori was well off the pace on the 15-2 shot in the early stages but had manoeuvred his Dermot Weld-trained mount into contention by the home turn, before sweeping to the front. Dettori, who won the 1991 Chester Cup on Star Player, said: ‘I had to go to Plan C. He’s not the fastest away and they went fast. I was able to slingshot around the turn and he picked up. ‘He can be lazy at times but today he showed a good turn of foot.’ Top-weight Falcon Eight, who beat The Grand Visir by two lengths, is a half-brother to Weld’s 2015 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes winner Free Eagle and his dual Irish St Leger winner Search For A Song, as well as Kyprios, who represents Aidan O’Brien in today’s Lingfield Derby Trial.
