SADLY, not all our searches can end with a reunion. Derek Simon, 87, of Hull, was looking for his old Army buddy, Aubrey Ellis, from Sidcup, Kent. ‘We were National Service conscripts who served together in the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards in Egypt’s Canal Zone in 1951,’ he wrote. ‘My photo shows us in our desert attire. We were Motor Transport Officers’ drivers, shared guard duties and had war-game training. ‘We also guarded ammunition dumps left over from World War II and prepared Army vehicles for inspection by the officers. It was hard work, but we also had fun times.’ Alas, Aubrey died in 2007. His son Lee emails: ‘I’d love to get in touch with Derek to learn more about his friendship with Dad.’ Relative Vivien Hill adds: ‘Aubrey and I shared greatgrandparents. I’m happy to speak to Derek about him.’ Another National Serviceman would like to chat about old times in the Canal Zone. ‘I was in Egypt a few years before Derek,’ writes Richard Barton, 94, also from Hull.
