So what exactly will they be doing at Holyrood?

-

After a marathon two full days of counting, the Scottish parliament election is over for another five years. But what happens next? Scottish Political Editor MICHAEL BLACKLEY assesses what lies ahead.

When do MSPs start work?

NEW MSPs will attend Holyrood tomorrow or Wednesday for induction sessions. This year’s sessions will be scaled back from a ‘Freshers Week’ and will focus on issues such as setting up an office, rules and regulations, and working with researchers. The first formal parliament sitting is on Thursday.

When are MSPs sworn in?

ALL MSPs will be sworn in this Thursday, when they will be asked to give an oath of allegiance to the Queen. This year, if a member is unable to participate physically for Covid-related reasons, they may take part in this event remotely.

When is the Presiding Officer elected?

MSPs will be asked to vote for the new Presiding Officer on Thursday. This is always a crucial role, which attracts a bumper £112, 1 salary. The MSP selected resigns their party affiliation for the full term of parliament in order to act impartially. Deputy Presiding Officers will be elected on Friday.

When does the First Minister get selected?

TECHNICALLY, MSPs must approve any First Minister, and this vote is likely to be held early next week, likely May 18. This is largely a formality after a clear election victory. Once approved by parliament, the new First Minister is formally appointed by the Queen, when they normally meet in person. There is also a ceremony surrounding the seal of office before judges at the Court of Session.

When is a government formed?

THE SNP needs to decide whether to form a minority administration again, or go into coalition. A Cabinet will then be selected. A major reshuffle is required this year due to many ministers standing down. The new Cabinet is unlikely to be confirmed until late next week.
