GP hopes win will send an ‘uplifting message’
A SCOTS GP has hailed the boost in the number of black, Asian and minority ethnic MSPs after being elected as a Scottish Conservative.
Sandesh Gulhane yesterday said he was ‘truly honoured’ to make it to Holyrood on the Glasgow regional list.
Mr Gulhane is also former chairman of the British Medical Association GP trainees committee and the doctor for Queen’s Park FC.
He has previously revealed he had been driven to stand in the election due to failures in the SNP’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Mr Gulhane, the first male MSP of Indian descent, said he will be proud to stand alongside his colleague Pam Gosal, now the first Indian Sikh MSP.
Mr Gulhane said yesterday: ‘I’m truly honoured that the voters of Glasgow have put their trust in me and elected me as an MSP.
‘Glasgow is one of the most diverse cities in the United Kingdom so it was wonderful to see Bame [black, Asian and minority ethnic] candidates from all parties elected.
I will be proud to be sworn in alongside Pam Gosal, which will send such an uplifting message to our Bame communities across Scotland. ‘I truly believe you need to see it to believe it – and if people see me in parliament, they will see no reason why they cannot do it. ‘Parliament should reflect the make-up of our communities. This should be the first step in continuing to increase representation of Bame candidates in parliament.’
