CHALMERS SALUTES UNITED’S YOUNG GUNS
AN old mobile phone advert used to run with the tagline: the future’s bright; the future’s Orange. It was a slogan that came to mind at Tannadice on Wednesday despite Dundee United’s young Tangerine dreamers eventually dropping a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Motherwell. With four academy graduates on show, 19-year-old Archie Meekison scored a cracking goal on his first start for the United. No casual observer could have guessed that young Kerr Smith in the heart of defence was only 16. Louis Appere was a danger on the left but, on the right flank, Logan Chalmers was the pick of the bunch as he contributed assists for Lawrence Shankland and Meekison. United see their future as rearing homegrown talent — and that is music to Chalmers’ ears. ‘It’s great to see the club sees young players as the way ahead,’ said the 21-year-old attacker, whose side conceded second-half goals to Chris Long and Devante Cole. ‘Archie got a goal against Motherwell and Kerr was outstanding at the back again. ‘It’s nice to see the young lads out there and I’m still young myself. ‘I thought I did well. The first goal (by Shankland) will go down as a cross but I think it was going in! But I want to add goals and assists, so I’m pleased. The second goal, I saw Archie pull to the edge of the box and I rolled it back to him and he did the rest. It was a great finish.’ It was Chalmers’ first start since picking up an ankle injury against Aberdeen last October. He aims to end the campaign on a high with victory at St Mirren on Sunday. ‘I came back in a positive way and hopefully I can finish the season strongly,’ said Chalmers.
