US reverses cuts to fight crime surge
US cities that slashed police budgets after George Floyd’s death are reinstating the money after a rise in crime.
New York and Baltimore are among cities reversing cuts last year – following calls to ‘defund the police’ after Mr Floyd was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis – amid double-digit rises in murders. New York is replacing half of the £282million cut.
In Baltimore, £15million was cut but a £19million increase was recently proposed.
