IN 1953, my father stopped off for petrol at the local garage in his black Rover with the number plate CVM 938. After paying, he was surprised to find he couldn’t open the door. The car he was trying to drive away was an identical model with the number plate CWM 938! Fast forward to 1985. I was leaving my house for the last time, moving to Wales. I was horrified to find I had locked my car keys in my Morris Ital estate. In desperation, I called on a neighbour, who had a battered Morris Mini, for help. The key fitted both Morris models! Goodbye Lancashire, hello Wales.

I BOUGHT a mop and put it in the boot of what I wrongly thought was my car. I went off to a cafe and when I returned the car had gone — with my mop in it — never to be seen again.
