22: On free-kick duties, the 20-year-old picks out Grant Hanley in the box but the move comes to nothing.

27: Taking a ball directly from goalkeeper David Marshall, Gilmour drives forward purposeful­ly into space.

41: Controllin­g the ball on his chest beautifull­y, he confidentl­y plays an incisive forward pass.

43: Gilmour is at the heart of Scotland’s best piece of ball retention of the half, ending with a corner after Adams’ shot is deflected. It has been a wonderful first half on his first start for his country.

76: His maiden start for Scotland comes to an end as he is replaced by Stuart Armstrong. Gilmour’s name is sung by the Tartan Army after an outstandin­g display that suggests he will be the beating heart of the national team’s midfield for many years to come.
