BIG MATCH RATINGS

- By JOHN McGARRY and BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

JORDAN PICKFORD 7/10 Everton keeper did not have a lot to do but made one wonderful save to stop O’Donnell from scoring.

REECE JAMES 7 Champions Leaguewinning right-back put in a good shift and rescued side with a goal-line clearance from Dykes.

JOHN STONES 6.5 Defender should have added to his one international goal but headed against post unmarked in six-yard box.

TYRONE MINGS 7.5 The Aston Villa man relished his aerial battle with Dykes and it was great contest between the two.

LUKE SHAW 7 Manchester United leftback was clattered early by Dykes but settled into a decent game for Gareth Southgate’s men.

KALVIN PHILLIPS 6.5 Star of the opening day win over Croatia, the midfielder enjoyed less success against Scotland’s middle three.

DECLAN RICE 6.5 Provided vital protection for his back four and let England’s attacking players go forward in search of goal.

PHIL FODEN 6 Bleached-blond hair, but talented Manchester City kid was not able to reprise the Gazza Euro 96 role.

MASON MOUNT 7 Fascinating battle with Gilmour, the Chelsea midfielder missed one chance and forced a good save from Marshall.

RAHEEM STERLING 6 Dangerous in flashes, the Manchester City attacker set up Mount with a chance he should probably have buried.

HARRY KANE 6 The skipper was an isolated figure up front for England before making way for Marcus Rashford.

SUBSTITUTES Grealish (Foden 63min), Rashford (Kane 75). Not used: Maguire, Henderson, Trippier, Ramsdale, Coady, Sancho, Calvert-Lewin, Chilwell, Johnstone, Bellingham.

GARETH SOUTHGATE 6 His side were over praised after their win over Croatia. They need to improve if they are to trouble the latter stages.

DAVID MARSHALL 7/10 Relieved to see Stones’ header come off post but otherwise well protected. Denied Mount’s fizzing drive after interval.

SCOTT McTOMINAY 7 Dropped into back-three. Early lapse let Sterling in. Got his passing game going in the right areas. Some key interceptions.

GRANT HANLEY 7.5 Put body on the line to protect Marshall. Not the first to find Kane’s movement a handful but kept him at bay.

KIERAN TIERNEY 7.5 Back in on left of defence. Aggressive and intelligent throughout. Incredible to think he could not have been fully fit here.

STEPHEN O’DONNELL 7.5 Retained his manager’s faith and tasked to curtail Sterling. Few hairy moments. Volley palmed away by Pickford.

BILLY GILMOUR 8 First start for Chelsea man full of deft touches and tenacity. Played like a veteran. Edged battle with club-mate mate Mount.

JOHN McGINN 7 Given more room to bomb forward and unsettled Rice. Early booking for dissent looked harsh.

CALLUM McGREGOR 7.5 Had to keep one eye on Foden and James while instigating attacks. Carried out both tasks with distinction.

ANDY ROBERTSON 7.5 Skipper curtailed his attacking instincts and ensured England’s attacking merry-goround didn’t get going.

LYNDON DYKES 6.5 Thumped into Shaw after five seconds. Gave as good as he got in duels with Mings. Saw shot blocked on the goal-line.

CHE ADAMS 6.5 Early effort blocked by Stones then unable to direct rebound home with his head. Fired over late on.

SUBSTITUTES Armstrong (Gilmour 76min), Nisbet (Adams 85). Not used: Christie, Gordon, Fleck, Cooper, Fraser, McLaughlin, Patterson, Hendry, Forrest, McKenna.

STEVE CLARKE 7.5 Rang changes and they contributed to improved display. Every right to believe side can beat Croatia and make last 16.
