THE body of a British teacher who went missing in Japan has been found by police.

Alice hodgkinson, 28, had been missing since July 1 from her home in Kanagawa after failing to turn up for work at an english language school in Tokyo.

Miss hodgkinson lived in edinburgh while studying for her psychology master’s degree at the University of edinburgh, but moved back to her home town of Nottingham after graduating in 2018.

Before she flew to Japan, she was said to have been staying with friends in Glasgow, having previously lived with her mother in St Anne’s, Nottingham.

her family said yesterday they had received the ‘worst news imaginable’ from police in Japan. Miss hodgkinson had lived there since last year and was working for the Shane group of english schools, which first reported her missing.

her father Steve, 68, said: ‘We were notified last night. Police told me that they had found Alice’s body. It was the worst news imaginable. We are devastated and it is a very difficult time for our family.

‘We are at a complete loss and her mother is struggling, she’s beside herself with grief.’

Miss hodgkinson was described by her family as an ‘intelligent, adventurous, confident, caring young woman with a tremendous sense of humour’ who would be sorely missed.

They thanked those involved in trying to trace her, and asked that the family be ‘left in peace at this difficult time’.

At the end of March last year, Miss hodgkinson posted a series of Instagram photos appearing to show her travels across Scotland. They included snaps of Falkirk, Loch Lomond, the Cairngorms and Inverness.

Friends in Scotland said they had lost touch with her in the past few months and were very concerned for her welfare.

The family said they want to repatriate her body as soon as possible.

Mr hodgkinson, a retired computer engineer, added: ‘Close family are aware. It is not a murder investigation and police are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death.’
