BMW STAGES A COUPE!
Britain has scored a significant international automotive coup as BMW’s sporty new 2 Series coupé makes its premiere at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. and that’s long before its wider European debut in September at the iaa Mobility 2021 show in BMW’s home city of Munich, which for the first time replaces the former Frankfurt Motor Show.
the new rear-wheel drive two-door coupé is available initially with three engine variants, including a powerful, range-topping 374hp 3-litre inline six-cylinder allwheel drive M240i xDrive version that will sprint from rest to 62 mph in just 4.3 seconds, up to 155 mph with fuel economy of 34.9 mpg.
Priced from £34,980, the entrylevel 220i has a 184 hp 2-litre twinturbo four-cylinder petrol engine achieving rest to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds up to a top speed of
147mph with 44.8mpg economy. From £36,900 there’s also a diesel 190 hp 220 d twin-turbo that accelerates from rest to 62mph in 6.9 seconds up to 147mph and offers economy of 60mpg.
Engines are linked to an eightspeed Steptronic Sport automatic with steering wheel paddles. all UK models are offered in M Sport specification as standard. But customers will have to wait until early next year for UK deliveries. in a normal year BMW sells more than 8,000 2 Series here a year.
accentuating its aerodynamic and coupé looks, it is 4 in longer, wider by 2.5in and lower by an inch than the car it replaces, and has a wheelbase 2in longer. Wider track geometry at the axles improves cornering.
the boot has 390 litres of space — 20 more than its predecessor — with a lower loading edge. Head-up display is available for the first time as an extra.
there will be logically grouped controls and quality materials, including black alcantara upholstery with blue stitching as standard in the M Sport, and Vernasca leather in the M240i. the paint-shade choices are six metallic and one non-metallic.
