Naismith to join forces with Burke in bid to help Killie youngsters flourish
TOMMY WRIGHT has made it clear Chris Burke’s veteran responsibilities will extend to taking young attackers Fraser Murray and Danny Armstrong under his wing. Jason Naismith, at 27, is a few years older than the new wide boys but he is also prepared to put his hand up for lessons from the most experienced man in the camp. Naismith, scorer of Killie’s second goal in a win over East Kilbride, loved linking with Burke on his debut in the Group G tie. The pair had been denied the chance to operate in tandem during their time together at Ross County because Burke was floored for most of 2016/17 with a recurrence of shingles. Now they’re making up for lost time, forming a fine partnership on the right as Kilmarnock target a top flight return and deep Premier Sports Cup run. Naismith said: ‘I was with Burkey at Ross County but never got a chance to play with him because of his illness. ‘I met him, though, he’s obviously a lovely guy. He’s a player I’ve always looked up to and someone I can learn from. I’m excited to work with him. He’s played at the top level and produced performances of a very high standard last season. ‘I think we linked well. The more games we play the better we’ll get.’ A typical all-action display from 37-year-old Burke was among the highlights as Killie avoided a slip-up at the Lowland League venue. Murray impressed, capping a menacing display with the opener before Naismith bundled home from a corner.
