GREAT SCOTT!

THREE MEDALS SO FAR ...NOW OUR SWIM KING CAN BE GB RECORD-BREAKER

- By IAN HERBERT in Tokyo

DUNCAN SCOTT is set to become the first Briton to win four medals at a single Olympic Games after adding another silver to his haul in Tokyo yesterday. But the 24-year-old Scot admitted he was initially ‘gutted’ after missing out on individual gold in the pool again, this time in the 200metres medley where China’s Wang Shun beat him by 0.28seconds. Scott was pipped to victory by teammate Tom Dean in the 200m freestyle earlier this week before helping GB’s men take gold in the 4x200m relay. Another podium finish in tomorrow’s final of the men’s 4x100m medley relay would see him make history — having now matched the record three medals won at a single Games by Chris Hoy, Max Whitlock, Jason Kenny, Bradley Wiggins and Henry Taylor. Asked about his crestfallen

reaction to yesterday’s near miss, when he faced away from the scoreboard confirming Wang’s win, Scott said: ‘Not PG (parental guidance) words. I think initially I’m just really gutted. Obviously times at an Olympic final almost go out of the window for me. ‘But I’ve had enough time to think about it a bit more and let it sink in — a massive PB again (1:55.28). I’ve dropped over a second-and-a-half in this event this year, still learning it a lot. I can hold my head high. Just not enough again.’ Scott, who won two relay silvers in Rio, is the first British swimmer to win three medals at a Games since 1908. That was also the year Britain claimed their best result in the pool with seven medals, with Scott’s result here taking them to six. Now as he contemplates a historic quartet of gongs, he said: ‘I need to try to put that to the back of my mind. ‘I’m obviously delighted with how things have gone so far with the relay boys the other morning and then my two individuals as well. ‘I came here to stand on the podium individually, and I did my best times in the final so I can’t ask for much more. ‘It’s not something I really think about, to be honest. I’ve got a job to do with the relay guys.’
