PHILIP RIDES AGAIN

First picture of Pryce as he plays duke in The Crown

- By Eleanor Sharples

IT was one of the Duke of Edinburgh’s favourite pastimes.

So it’s only fitting that the first look of Sir Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip in

the upcoming series of The Crown shows him carriage driving.

In an exclusive picture, the veteran Welsh actor can be seen dressed in a smart tweed jacket, black bowler hat and sunglasses as he holds on to the carriage reins. The Game Of Thrones star, 74, will play the Queen’s husband in the fifth and sixth series’ of the lavish Netflix drama, following in the footsteps of Matt Smith, 38, and Tobias Menzies, 47.

The pictures were taken at Knebworth House in Stevenage earlier this month.

The duke took up carriage-driving in his fifties, switching from polo because of an arthritic wrist.

He shaped the sport in the nation and was still competing in his eighties, representing Britain in three European championships and six world championships in total.

Imelda Staunton will replace Olivia Colman as the Queen in the new episodes.
