Food for thought
AS WAR babies we knew about the scarcity of food and that wastage was unacceptable. i have a method that is pretty much fool-proof to ensure no food gets binned.
I know fresh items had to be bought daily in those far-off times but we can now choose big shopping days with a list that has been in the making for a few days.
On unpacking, we will decide on the next three days’ meals and place that food safely in the fridge. The remainder is then carefully portioned and put in the freezer.
I keep a freezer listing, shelf by shelf, so that future meals can be quickly chosen each morning and left to defrost. items are deleted from the list as used. We can see at a glance what is still available before going to supermarkets. This avoids a lot of duplication.
It works for me – there is no need to frantically manhandle everything in the freezer hoping to find something suitable every day. it also allows for a nice wee discussion with my husband every morning to decide what will be on the menu that night.
It takes a bit of an initial organise but, in the long run, saves time, money, frustration and, thankfully, avoids any waste.
