Human emergency
THE high temperatures in Spain (Mail) are not that phenomenal.
While living in Alicante, I noted in my diary on August 5, 2017 it was 47c. While a student in Seville in August 1968, the mercury was in the high 40s but a climate emergency was not declared.
Often the tragic aftermath of extreme weather is caused by inept people.
Floods in Alicante in 2019 destroyed my daughter’s home and those of hundreds of villagers.
Heavy rain was exacerbated by poor land husbandry, with irrigation canals not dredged.
A dam was opened, allowing water to surge onto land and into homes. Farmers are fighting for compensation
