Has DVLA put the brakes on licence renewals?

-

CONGRATULATIONS to the reader who got her new driving licence in just five days of applying to the DVLA (Letters). I made my online application on July 3 and sent off my old licence, cut in half as requested. I still have not received the new one. I’ve phoned the customer care number on many occasions, but always get the recorded message: ‘All our lines are busy — call back later.’ I’ve also sent emails and even a letter to the DVLA chief executive, but have not received a response. We all know the pandemic caused difficulties for offices, but the delay and lack of response is unacceptable.

PETER REYNOLDS, Melksham, Wilts.

I AM an HGV driver in food distribution. In March, I applied to the DVLA to renew my licence. I have still not received it and am unable to return to work. Is there any wonder there is a driver shortage affecting goods delivery?

DAVID CROSS, Warrington, Cheshire.

I WAS worried when I applied for my driving licence because I’d heard about delays. I was relieved to receive it after a week. If only all businesses were as efficient.

M. SPRINGER, Reading, Berks.

MY DRIVING licence expires in September, so I sent off the form and cut-up licence as requested at the beginning of July, but have heard nothing. I only have a photocopy to prove I have a valid licence. Let’s hope the boys and girls in blue will accept that as proof.

PETER A. CALDWELL, Broadwindsor, Dorset.

HOW fortunate for the reader that she received her driving licence so promptly. However, it was handled online with no involvement of DVLA staff. I applied for mine by post, sent by recorded delivery. Two months later, I’m still waiting.

ROY POTTER, Dereham, Norfolk.
