McLean strikes for Norwich to cap Scots recall

- By GEORGE GRANT

KENNY McLEAN celebrated his Scotland recall with a goal in Norwich’s 6-0 demolition of Bournemouth.

The midfielder (pictured) missed the Euros through injury but is fit again and claimed his first goal of the season on a chastening night for Cherries boss Scott Parker.

Andros Townsend fired Everton into the third round after they overcame the straight red card shown to Moise Kean to claim a 2-1 victory over Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Everton looked to be up against it when Alex Iwobi’s goal was cancelled out by Tom Lees before Kean was giving his marching orders.

The Italian, who had earlier had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside, allowed his frustrations to get the better of him in an off-theball incident with Sorba Thomas, but Townsend’s first Everton goal made sure there was no cup upset.

Cameron Archer scored a hat-trick on a dream first start for Aston Villa as Dean Smith’s much-changed side cruised to a comprehensive 6-0 win at Barrow.

Having returned to the competition last season after 48 years playing non-league football, the TV cameras were in town as Mark Cooper looked to oversee one of the Bluebirds’ greatest cup triumphs.

But Villa spoiled the party at a sell-out Dunes Hotel Stadium, where 19-year-old full debutant Archer scored his first three goals for the club in the second-round tie.

Patrick Vieira’s difficult start to life at Crystal Palace continued as they were caught cold in an all-Premier League tie at Watford.

The visitors were on top for long spells at Vicarage Road but came unstuck with four minutes left, when debutant

Ashley Fletcher turned in Cucho Hernandez’s cross at the far post. Palace have failed to score in their first three competitive games under Vieira.

The Eagles were the only topflight side to exit the cup last night, but Brentford looked set to join them for an hour before they staved off a huge upset at home to League Two side Forest Green.

Jack Aitchison gave the visitors a shock lead inside 10 minutes but second-half goals from summer signing Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbuemo turned the game on its head for Thomas Frank’s side. Marcus Forss secured a 3-1 win with four minutes left.

Two goals in three first-half minutes from former Falkirk defender Murray Wallace helped Millwall into the third round as they came from behind to beat Cambridge 3-1 at The Den.

Leeds were also made to work hard at home to lower-league opposition but broke League One Crewe’s resistance with three goals in the final 10 minutes, including one from Kalvin Phillips.

Bruno Lage picked up his first win as Wolves boss as they fired four second-half goals past Nottingham Forest, piling yet more pressure on Chris Hughton, while Brighton maintained their perfect start to the campaign with a 2-0 win at Cardiff.

Elsewhere, Birmingham goalkeeper Neil Etheridge played his first game for the club since being hospitalised with Covid last month, but he couldn’t stop Lee Bowyer’s side falling to a 2-0 defeat at home to Fulham.

Wayne Rooney also bowed out of the cup as Derby lost 2-1 at Sheffield United.
