Super shed warehouses on the rise

-

SURGING demand for online shopping is fuelling the rise of giant super shed warehouses across the UK.

Nearly 15m square feet of warehouse space was built last year – equivalent to 191 Premier League football pitches – according to research by Altus Group.

This included 49 so-called super sheds, which are bigger than 85,000 square feet in size.

They are needed by retailers from Amazon to Next to cope with the growing number of internet orders.

Most of the warehouses are being built in the ‘golden triangle’ in the Midlands.

Altus said 15 super sheds were built in the East Midlands, ten in the East of England and seven in the West Midlands.

Six more warehouses were built in the North West, five in Yorkshire and Humberside, four in the South East and two in the South West.
