Probe into SNP official’s ‘threat’ to businessman

- By Michael Blackley and Joe Hutchison

AN investigation has been launched into an SNP official accused of threatening a businessman.

Ian McPherson, who works for MP Allan Dorans, raised concerns with painter Craig Hainey who had invited a Tory MSP to the launch of his new business but nobody from the SNP. Mr Hainey claimed the official told him: ‘I hope it doesn’t affect your business.’

Mr Dorans has now confirmed that the matter is being investigated as an ‘employment issue’.

The row erupted after Mr Hainey invited Tory Sharon Dowey to the launch at Ayr’s North Harbour.

Mr Hainey, 45, said he had invited Mrs Dowey to cut the ribbon in order to get local publicity.

He said: ‘I got a phone call, and this guy, who didn’t introduce himself, said, “Sharon Dowey isn’t your local MSP, it should be Siobhian Brown. I hope it doesn’t affect your

business”. I googled his phone number. It came up it was an SNP councillor. I phoned him back and asked if it was Ian McPherson. He said yes.’

Mr Hainey said that nine days after the call, Mr McPherson visited his shop to apologise.

He added: ‘He then pulled out an envelope and said, “Look, there is some money in there, why don’t you take that and make a charitable donation to somebody?” I told him to get on his bike.’ Mr McPherson told the Ayrshire Post it was ‘a terrible error of judgment’.

A spokesman for Mr Dorans said: ‘Ian McPherson is employed by Allan Dorans on a part-time basis. He regrets his actions and has apologised. This matter is being investigated as an employment issue.’

Mrs Dowey said: ‘This sort of Nationalist bullying and intimidation is out of order. Everyone working in politics should be supporting new businesses, not threatening them over who they invited to open their premises.’
