REFLECTIONS IN COLOUR
by Chris Howard (Muscular Dystrophy Stories, editions at £20, crispandsharp.co.uk)
AS WE emerge from the Paralympics reeling at the obstacles those with disabilities must climb, photographer Chris Howard’s book of landscapes illustrates beautifully both the challenges and hopes of a life constrained by pain. His stunning images of the natural world come with reflections from sufferers of the muscle-wasting disease muscular dystrophy on what the scenes mean to them: freedom, longing, loss, motivation and possibility are recurring themes. Louise Halling, 42, was inspired by Boats At Deal (pictured) because she often feels like ‘a small boat on a big sea’, but water, she says, ‘gives me a freedom I don’t have on land ... in the water I am free’.
