Spurs survive shoot-out

- TOM COLLOMOSSE at Molineux

HARRY KANE rediscovered his scoring touch ahead of the north London derby as Tottenham beat Wolves on penalties to squeeze into round four of the Carabao Cup. Tanguy Ndombele and Kane put Spurs 2-0 up inside 23 minutes but Leander Dendoncker pulled one back and Daniel Podence equalised just before the hour. Both sides wasted chances to win it and Ruben Neves hit the bar with a deflected strike with only two minutes remaining. Then Neves was one of three Wolves players to miss as Tottenham took the shoot-out 3-2, Kane scoring their first kick, as Nuno Espirito Santo made a second successful return to his former club after winning 1-0 here last month. Nuno admitted: ‘We spent time preparing for penalties — it’s not luck, it’s about giving the goalkeeper the right information and players taking responsibility.’ Wolves’ summer signing Yerson Mosquera was carried off on a stretcher in the ninth minute following a challenge with Kane and it was replacement Conor Coady’s slip that helped give Spurs the lead. His clearance rebounded off Ndombele, allowing the Frenchman to step inside Willy Boly before scoring. Kane added a second in the 23rd minute, racing on to Dele Alli’s pass and driving the ball into the bottom corner. But Wolves rallied and Korean Hee-chan Hwang picked out Dendoncker with a corner for the Belgian to send a header beyond reserve goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini. Wolves were furious not to be given an early second-half penalty when Hwang tumbled under Cristian Romero’s challenge as he tried to convert Ki-Jana Hoever’s low ball, then Ndombele nearly scored his second when his 30-yard effort produced a comical fumble from John Ruddy, with the ball eventually going over the bar. Wolves made the most of their escape to equalise just before the hour. Ndombele was caught napping and Dendoncker collected the loose ball before finding Podence, who finished. Ruddy made an excellent save to stop Bryan Gil tapping in Kane’s cross. He did even better in the 67th minute, pushing over Kane’s point-blank header.
