Two hundred men — the marchers from Jarrow-on-Tyne — arrived in Chester-leStreet tonight on the first stage of the journey which in three weeks will bring them to London. The marchers are bringing a petition signed by 12,000 people.

In 1936, 200 men began the Jarrow Crusade as a protest against unemployme­nt and poverty.

OCTOBER 6, 1962

THE Government is to arm itself soon with power to stamp out cruelty to children in their own homes. Children exposed to brutality or neglect by parents will be taken from their homes and looked after before the case is taken to court. A tough warning to the parents is likely to be given before this is done.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

BRITT EKLAND, 79. The Swedish actress starred in Get Carter and The Man with The Golden Gun. Asked what she got from out of being on I’m A Celebrity, Ekland (right) said: ‘Nothing except a urinary tract infection.’ Ekland stays in shape by doing Pilates with her chihuahua and running backwards.

GERRY ADAMS, 73. The Belfast-born politician stood down as president of Sinn Fein after 34 years in 2018. Six years before his birth, Adams’s father was shot while taking part in an IRA attack on a police patrol. In 2015, he admitted to enjoying trampolini­ng naked with his dog.

BORN ON THIS DAY

JoAN LITTLEwooD (1914-2002). The London-born theatre director made her name with oh, what A Lovely war! and A Taste of Honey. Her first production was Hamlet, which she staged aged 11, playing all the roles herself. Critic Kenneth Tynan said: ‘It now seems quite likely that when the annals of the British theatre in the middle years of the 20th century come to be written, Joan’s name will lead all the rest.’

CARoLE LoMBARD (1908-1942). The American actress, born Jane Alice Peters, starred in My Man Godfrey and Mr & Mrs Smith. Lombard was praised as ‘the best dressed woman in Hollywood’. She died in a plane crash aged 33 while on a tour selling war bonds following Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1941.

ON OCTOBER 6…

IN 1982, Pop star Madonna (right) released her debut single, Everybody. It failed to appear on the U.S. or UK charts. IN 2010, photo-sharing app Instagram launched. It now has a billion users.
