Sea and an island view to treasure
IT overlooks a harbour designed by the grandfather of Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson – and boasts a view of an island that any owner is sure to treasure. But while Inchkeith may lack the swashbuckling opportunities of the titular isle in Stevenson’s pirate adventure, this modern masterpiece of a home has more than enough to make it worth digging out your map and compass.
The architect-designed house in Granton, a sort of Edinburgh-bythe-sea part of the capital, looks out over the Firth of Forth towards the Kingdom of Fife.
Naturally, the living area was positioned in such a way as to exploit the views over the water – captivating enough by day but positively dramatic at night.
At dusk, they are dominated by Inchkeith lighthouse – another example of Robert Stevenson’s 19th-century engineering genius.
The lounge/dining room has vaulted ceilings, a log-burning stove and a spot where you can relax and drink in the view while you enjoy your meals.
The well-equipped kitchen has two Neff ovens, a combination microwave, warming drawer, integrated coffee machine, electric induction hob, wine fridge and dishwasher. From the kitchen you enjoy access to the bamboo-fringed garden and two levels of decking and seating areas.
The utility room has a two-yearold premium Worcester Bosch boiler, as well as a sink and white goods.
The mezzanine level above the lounge is at present used as a music room and art studio, no doubt enhanced by the light from the panorama windows. There’s also a TV room, which could be used as a fifth bedroom.
One of the four double bedrooms is used as a gym, and the master bedroom is particularly opulent thanks to its two en suite bathrooms, built-in wardrobes and bespoke dressing room.
Further luxury comes in the form of underfloor heating to the three bathrooms on the ground floor.
The Firth of Forth might be a bit nippy at this time of the year but in the garage the owners have installed a swim spa which provides a powerful current you can swim against.
The garden offers a beautiful sea-view decking area at the eastern side of the house, perfect for an al fresco dining area. The west side has tiered decking, leading to the rear and front of the property.
An outline business case has recently been made for a £1.3billion coastal town to be developed at Granton Harbour.
If approved, the blueprint could provide around 3,500 net-zero carbon homes, a primary school, health centre, sustainable transport plus a coastal park.
A beacon of light for the project has been located within the iconic Granton Gasholder, in a joint initiative with Edinburgh College.
Still, it can’t hold a candle to Robert Stevenson’s lifesaving beam out in the water.
