We’re on a (sausage) roll!

Don’t tell the health police, but Greggs has opened its first drive-thru... and it’s proving VERY popular

THROUGHOUT repeated lockdowns, health chiefs have stressed the importance of taking plenty of exercise and ensuring we steer clear of takeaways.

But it seems all that worthy advice cannot compete with the lure of Scotland’s newest Greggs – and hungry customers tired of being told what to eat do not even have to leave their seats.

A long queue of cars formed yesterday after the company – famous for popular snacks such as steak bakes and bacon breakfast baguettes – opened the country’s first ‘drive–thru’ outlet.

The branch at Dalkeith, in Midlothian, serves up all of the bakery chain’s much-loved sweet and savoury products – including the vegan version of its signature sausage rolls.

Local favourites including Lorne sausage and pineapple tarts are also available, either to eat in or take away.

The opening of the branch brings with it more than a dozen new jobs. Roisin Currie, retail and people director for Greggs, said: ‘Our new shop in Dalkeith has brought 16 new jobs to the local area, as well as providing customers with a modern, convenient new place to experience their favourite Greggs food on-the-go.’

Yesterday’s lunchtime rush saw a steady stream of hungry customers, some of whom had to queue for around ten minutes.

But by 2pm, ordering was almost instant, with barely enough time to get payment ready before the hot food was ready to go at the next window.

Service was rapid and with a smile, with customers even given the chance to order ahead via app.

Store manager Andy Ewing said: ‘We can’t wait to welcome both Greggs fans and new customers to our brand new shop.’
