THe greed and sheer stupidity caused by the recent petrol shortage brought back a memory. Thirty years ago, when I lived in Beckenham, Kent, there was a water shortage so a standpipe was set up. I waited in the queue with my eight-year-old grandson Jack, who was holding the two containers I was going to fill. Things were going smoothly, then everything came to a standstill. My grandson stepped out and said: ‘look Grandad, that lady at the front is being very greedy.’ she had what looked like a large plastic storage tank from a caravan. everyone was watching as she filled it up laboriously. ‘Fear not, Jack,’ I said. ‘Her comeuppance is coming shortly.’ sure enough, once she’d filled the tank, she went to put it on a trolley.
