Is Cop26 a cop out?

-

cOP26 means thousands of people have flown into Glasgow from all around the world to tell the rest of us we shouldn’t go anywhere by plane.

I’ve done my bit: all the light bulbs in the house have been changed to leds, the thermostat has been turned down one degree, I have a meat-free dinner one night a week and promise to use the car less.

A bit more loft insulation wouldn’t go amiss, but I’ll wait until Boris gives in to Insulate Britain and I can get it done using my own taxes.

I was feeling satisfied with my efforts until I was told the state-ofthe-art boiler I had installed last year for £2,000 will soon be obsolete.

The latest idea is heat pumps, even though they are not very good and cost £15,000. Boris says they will be as cheap as microwaves, so I’ll wait until then. But will the £10,000-plus cost of installation come down, too?

They want to turn off the gas, so my cooker and fire must be replaced.

Then we’re expected to cough up another £20,000-plus on an electric car. At least it will be cheaper to run than petrol or diesel — or will the Government come up with a wheeze to dip into our pockets to make up for what it will lose in fuel duty?

All of a sudden, my self-satisfaction at doing my bit is turning to a realisation that we will all be worse off and our standards of living will plummet to Victorian levels.

Meanwhile, china and Russia are ignoring calls for the 2050 net zero deadline and will become richer as we become poorer. cop26 feels more like a cop out.

TERRY COATES, Birmingham.
