Connolly keeps calm over Raith title hopes

- By DARREN JOHNSTONE at Stark’s Park

Five teams separated by only two points at the Championship summit. That is the reason Raith Rovers playmaker Aidan Connolly is refusing to get carried away by the club moving joint top with Kilmarnock.

Just one goal separates Raith and the leaders after John McGlynn’s side came from behind to beat Morton, extending their unbeaten run to 11 in the process.

However, Connolly, scorer of the equaliser after Michael Ledger had given the visitors an early lead, insists there is no chance that Rovers will become complacent.

‘You have to keep your feet on the ground and work hard in every game and keep doing your thing,’ said the former Dundee United and Dunfermline player.

‘And at the end of the season, we’ll see what happens.

‘it was a good result against Morton, it was a big game. The gaffer said before the game we had to get three points if we want to challenge up there.

‘it’s a tight league and a lot of teams will fancy themselves, every game is difficult whether you are at the top or bottom.

‘We played Dunfermline a few weeks ago when they were at the bottom and they were probably the better team, so no game is easy.’

Connolly brought Raith level in the first half after Morton capitalised on a bright start to take the lead through Ledger after only five minutes.

ethan Ross, who set up Connolly for his goal, got involved in the action himself in the 67th minute with a sublime finish that left visiting goalkeeper Jack Hamilton with no chance.

Morton fell to ninth in the table, but boss Gus MacPherson, who had defender Alan Lithgow sent off in the 71st minute for a second booking, said: ‘There have been encouraging signs all season but at times it’s been frustrating.’

Anton Dowds scored a late winner as Arbroath beat leaders Kilmarnock 1-0 at Rugby Park, while fourth-placed Partick maintained their challenge with a 1-0 home win over Hamilton thanks to a goal in the second half from Lewis Mayo.
