- By Bethan Sexton

A TERRIFIED shop worker was followed by two thugs who pushed him into a car before forcing him to reopen his store so they could rob it.

The 24-year-old Scotmid employee was bundled into a vehicle in the Tollcross area of Edinburgh on Thursday night.

He had just finished his shift and was walking along Spey Street at around 10.45pm, when two men forced him into a blue Volkswagen Tiguan.

They drove him back to the store, where he was threatened and made to open the premises. The attackers stole a four-figure sum before driving away around 11.25pm.

The Tiguan was later discovered on fire at Edinburgh’s Lochend Park, next to a basketball court. It has since been established the vehicle was stolen from a breakin at the Maybury Car Sales in the city on December 12.

Detective Inspector Kevin Tait, from Edinburgh Division CID, said: ‘We believe that this was a targeted attack and that those responsible had been following the victim prior to approaching him and forcing him to allow them entry to his place of work.

‘While this was a very frightening experience for him, thankfully he was uninjured and we are now pursuing a number of lines of inquiry to trace the suspects.
