Immoral for West not to aid Ukraine

-

hAs the West lost its moral compass? the most outrageous atrocities, in fact, war crimes, are being committed by a powerful country against its much smaller neighbour and we wring our hands and condemn the aggressor, but what are we doing to help Ukraine? We impose sanctions and supply ‘defence’ weapons. Nato says it’s not its job to send in troops and anyway that would cause an escalation. it is now having a debate over what constitutes defensive or offensive weapons. the U.s., the so-called leader of the democratic world, says the same thing. the Germans and italians continue to pay vast sums to Russia for its oil and gas, undermining the financial sanctions we have imposed. the UN, apart from suspending Russia from the human Rights Council, has done precisely nothing. Last week it allowed the Russian Ambassador to the UN to give a 30-minute propaganda speech filled with ludicrous lies. Who thought that it was a great strategy to tell Putin we would never use military force against him? Didn’t that give him the go ahead to do exactly what he is doing now and what he will continue to do? An evil bully like Putin responds to force in the same way every bully reacts: he backs down because fundamentally he’s a coward. it seems impossible that any negotiated peace can be reached with such a man. Macron no doubt likes to think of himself as the link to facilitate some settlement, but he’s made a fool of himself. Any discussion with Putin is a complete waste of time because nothing he says can be trusted. he may be clever, but he is an inveterate liar as well as a mass murderer. Nato and the West should immediately supply the Ukrainians with all the weapons and training, offensive or otherwise, it needs to counter and defeat the Russian invasion. We need to rid the world of this vile, dangerous individual and his criminal entourage. if we don’t, we will soon regret it.

EDDIE YOUNG, London N3. i WAs reduced to tears by the photo of the six-year-old Ukrainian boy at the grave of his mother, which was published on the front page of the Mail. i suffer from damage after a career in the services, but it’s nowhere near the pain etched on that young lad’s face. i will think about him for a long time. Anyone know where Putin is? HAMISH SMILLIE, Whitstable, Kent.
