25-mile road detour for Balmoral trip
VISITORS to the Queen’s private Scottish retreat are facing a 25-mile detour from today.
Bridge works mean those travelling from the north to Balmoral – which has opened for the season – will face a longer trip.
But a replacement for the crumbling Gairnshiel Bridge will bring to an end years of traffic misery for people travelling between Aberdeenshire and Moray.
The 18th century hump-backed Gairnshiel Bridge forms a key part of the A939 Ballater to Tomintoul road.
However, the 1749 structure has over the years been shut frequently due to concerns over stability and damage caused by motorists.
Aberdeenshire Council has awarded a £3.8million contract for the new bridge over the River Gairn. The council expects it will be completed by next spring.
The old A-listed bridge will be retained as it is, and protected for future generations to enjoy.
Meanwhile, another Aberdeenshire road near Balmoral closed yesterday for five days to repair a landslip along the route.
Glen Muick road will be shut to repair the landslip near Aucholzie.
A council spokesman said: ‘Aberdeenshire Council apologises for any inconvenience this road closure may cause and thanks those affected for their patience.’
