THE decision as to whether the dependenci­es of Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands should have dual sovereignt­y (Letters) can’t be decided by the Government, Spain or Argentina.

Under the UN charters on self-determinat­ion and decolonisa­tion, the views of the residents have to be taken into considerat­ion. Both have voted overwhelmi­ngly in referendum­s to remain British.

Their right to live as they see fit under a political system of their choice must be protected.

We see in Ukraine the consequenc­es when one nation decides that another shouldn’t have that right. MICHAEl J. FITzPATRIC­K,
