Labour of love

-

I GAVE birth in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, which were not like the over-medicalised experience described by a midwife (Letters).

Pain relief was offered, but not needed, and there was gentle care from an attentive midwife and no stitches.

The babies were in the nursery at night only for the first three days to establish regular feed times and give me a rest — bliss.

name supplied, Chingford, East london.

IN THE 1960s, I spent two days in labour, which resulted in a vacuum extraction.

A member of staff showing expectant mothers around the ward pointed out my son’s marked head and said it was because I’d been uncooperative. I’ve never forgotten that heartless remark.

Mrs S. WIlSon, Stamford Bridge, E. Yorks.
