Oasis in the sky that’s off to Chelsea

IT started out as a handful of marigolds to brighten up his 18th-floor balcony when he was off work during the pandemic.

Now the urban oasis created by bar manager Jason Williams will feature at next month’s Chelsea Flower Show.

Mr Williams, 35, documented his struggles with gardening at 200ft under the online name ‘the Cloud Gardener’.

And he applied to showcase his Cirrus Garden, named after highlevel clouds, at the prestigiou­s

‘I was in tears when I found out’

RHS show after amassing more than 20,000 followers on social media. He said: ‘I was in tears when I found out.

‘I have no background in gardening or landscapin­g, but it is a real credit to the Royal Horticultu­ral Society that they have realised there are so many different types of gardens out there.

‘I do my own research and document it on YouTube and TikTok and I think my lived experience helped get me over the line.’

Mr Williams lives in a two-bedroom flat in Manchester with his brother Ethan, 23. His Chelsea garden is a replica of his balcony, which is lit by fairy lights and is full of flowers, herbs, salads, vegetables and even a small fish pond. It will go on public display from May 24.
