PICK OF TODAY’S RADIO
TO BARBRA, 12.04PM, RADIO 4
‘SHE has got up people’s noses and resolutely kept her own. She is a miracle.’ Maureen Lipman shares her admiration for Barbra Streisand (pictured) in this archive show. Barbra was under a lot of pressure from Hollywood to get her nose ‘fixed’ and Maureen, a Jewish teen with show business dreams, found Barbra’s refusal to let the studio system change her inspiring. As part of this week’s 80th birthday celebrations, Maureen looks at some of Barbra’s career highlights. Maureen also recalls some of her own — not always easy — encounters with the Brooklyn-born diva and superstar.
■ A BRAND-new work, with its roots deep in the past, gets its debut in a live classical/
jazz RADIO 3 IN CONCERT (7.30PM), given by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Luke Styles’s saxophone concerto Tracks In The Orbit draws on an idea that the solar system is like a vast mill, with the planets grinding their tracks in the heavens. The work was specially written for the saxophonist Iain Ballamy. Jazz-infused works by Fiona Monbet and Darius Millhaud are also on the bill.
