SOMETHING STUPID

(apologies to C. Carson Parks, frank and nancy sinatra) I know I stand in line to board the 7.29, Each morning come what may, But nine times out of ten it’s running late or cancelled, That’s when tempers start to fray, And everyone gets mad, They only calm down when the tardy train comes into view, And then I go and spoil it all By saying something stupid — well you would, too.

I can see it in the eyes of those sophisticated guys They think that I’m a jerk, But they don’t realise that I will never get a rise If I am late for work.

I practise every day to find some witty things to say Cos they think I’m a fool, But then I think I’ll wait and if the train’s not running late Then I’ll just play it cool, The time is right, I say:

‘Hi, folks.’ Then tell them jokes until we get to Waterloo, And then I go and spoil it all By saying something stupid like I always do. i. g. fenner, new Milton, hants.
