Bellf ield ‘got me pregnant weeks before killing Milly’

- By Rebecca Camber Crime and Security Editor

LEVI Bellfield fathered a secret son weeks before killing Milly Dowler, it was claimed yesterday.

A mother has told of her torment after having a one-night stand with the serial killer, who took her home in the car he used to abduct the schoolgirl.

The woman believes Bellfield may have wanted to recruit her as a Myra Hindley-style accomplice after he joked with her about kidnapping young girls.

When she became pregnant, the woman said, she knew nothing of Bellfield’s past because he was using an alias – and she learnt of his crimes only after his car was featured in a TV Crimewatch appeal.

Yesterday, the woman, who does not wish to be identified, said she had spent the past two decades hiding the truth from her son, 19, for fear it will leave him ‘broken’.

She added: ‘How do you tell your child their father is Britain’s most dangerous killer?’

Bellfield, 53, is serving a whole-life sentence for the kidnap and murder of Milly Dowler, 13, in March 2002, the killing of students Marsha McDonnell and Amelie Delagrange in 2003 and 2004, and the attempted murder of schoolgirl Kate Sheedy in 2004.

The mother of three says she met him in February 2002 on her 29th birthday, when he plied her with champagne at a nightclub. Bellfield called himself Levi Taylor.

She claims he drove her to her flat in Kingston upon Thames – six miles from where he snatched Milly – in the same red Daewoo Nexia he would later use in the abduction.

Recalling that night, she told the Sunday Mirror: ‘He introduced himself as Levi Taylor and seemed cheery and like a cheeky chappy. I wasn’t one for having one-night stands, but he manipulated me. It’s terrifying to know I was in the same car he used to snatch Milly. I feel lucky to have survived.’

After they had sex, Bellfield allegedly joked about kidnapping girls, saying: ‘I’ve always thought about burning schoolgirls with cigarettes.’

She added: ‘I wonder if he was trying to recruit me to be his Myra Hindley. But I just said, “You’re sick”. Why would someone just come out with something like that? I’ve a daughter myself. It was horrific.’

The woman resolved not to see the wheel clamper again.

She claims that around the time of Milly’s disappearance he called and said he was having a bad day. She said: ‘I asked him what was wrong and he said he couldn’t tell me, he said he couldn’t trust me.’

Her son was born in November 2002, but she says she only learnt of Bellfield’s real identity when police contacted her in July 2006. Police documents reveal she referred to it as ‘the worst mistake of my life’.

She said: ‘This is something I’ve kept a secret for more than 20 years. I’ve not wanted to talk about it.’
