Check out the orcas, shoppers!

- By Piriyanga Thirunimalan

THEY are a rare but spectacular sight when they visit Scotland’s shores.

And this killer whale did not disappoint as it was spotted cruising off the Caithness coast.

Shoppers at Thurso’s Lidl store were treated to a show by the orca as it swam nearby in shallow waters.

The footage was captured by 25-year-old Sam Langlois, who tweeted: ‘Bull orca patrolling the shallow waters at Murkle (Caithness) looking for seals last Wednesday.

‘Just ridiculous how close to shore they come. I think the video captures that.’

Though they often frequent cold, coastal waters, orcas can be found from the polar regions to the Equator.

Scotland’s group of killer whales are visible all year round and can be seen off the west coast and in the Northern Isles. However, due to the limited size of their pod, sightings are rare – and there are fears they could become rarer still as the distinctive black and white predators are now believed to be an endangered species.
