Putin strike on food depot

- From James Franey in Mykolaiv

RUSSIA aimed to deepen the food crisis in Ukraine yesterday as its missiles destroyed a major grain warehouse.

an airstrike reduced the depot in the eastern city of Dnipro to rubble, belying Moscow’s claims it is only targeting military facilities.

regional governor Valentyn reznichenko said there were no reports of casualties following the strike in the city’s synelnykivskyi district.

‘russia continues to compromise global food security,’ said Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko. ‘Like blocking the Black sea and Ukrainian ports wasn’t enough.’

Those unwilling or unable to flee eastern Ukraine are increasingly desperate for food – in besieged cities such as Mariupol people have even taken to drinking from puddles or eating stray animals. President Volodymyr Zelensky yesterday said russia wanted to spark a global food crisis by seizing his country’s entire coastline. ‘russia does not let ships come in or go out, it is controlling the Black sea,’ he told australian broadcaster Channel 9.

Ukraine’s minister of foreign affairs

Dmytro Kuleba said: ‘russia’s war of aggression threatens not only Ukraine but the entire world, and endangers global food security.’

Last night, an airstrike struck the southern port of odesa. reports said a ‘religious building’ was among those hit, leaving several dead.

The Mail Force Ukraine appeal and Ukrainian Embassy in London are sending 500,000 food boxes. The appeal was started with £500,000 from parent company DMGT at the request of chairman Lord rothermere and Lady rothermere.
