The day it rained on Tom Finney’s parade

-

THe first football match I attended was Manchester City v Preston North end at Maine Road. It was a wet Wednesday night in September 1957 and I was eight years old. dad told me: ‘Watch number seven for Preston — Tom Finney.’ City won 2-0. After the match, dad said he thought with it being wet, Tom would be used to it because he was a plumber!

IN 1956, I was 12 years old and standing outside Ninian Park in Cardiff when the Preston North end team arrived. They brushed past us as we tried to get autographs. We were all shouting ‘Tom, give us your autograph’ to no avail. Then a lone voice beside me shouted: ‘Mr Finney, can I have your autograph please?’ The player spun around, walked over to us with a smile and took the time to sign all of our autograph books. A true gentleman. Michael Morgan,

Yateley, Hants.
