Don’t write off unlucky Hamilton, warns Webber

- DANIEL MATTHEWS

LEWIS HAMILTON is never more dangerous than with his back against the wall claims Mark Webber, who believes much of the flak aimed at him is unfair. The Mercedes man has already written off his chances of winning an eighth world title. After only one podium in the first four races he sits seventh, 58 points off leader Charles Leclerc. But ex-Formula One man Webber thinks Hamilton is being blamed for things beyond his control. ‘People are being pretty harsh, pretty fast,’ said the Australian. ‘In Bahrain, he drove brilliantly to third place. In Saudi, there was a safety car with a pit stop, same in Melbourne. So there have been quite a few points he’s missed through no fault of his own.’ He added: ‘Lewis is at his most dangerous with his back against the wall. He’s never short of motivation — that’s why he’s probably the greatest of all time.’ Meanwhile Porsche and Audi will enter F1, according to Herbert Diess, boss of parent company Volkswagen. Porsche could partner Red Bull, while Audi want to buy a team, with Sauber favourites.
