THE GREAT BRITISH SEWING BEE, 9PM, BBC1

-

LAST week, we said goodbye to theatre manager Mitch Bridgewater from Cumbria when he was stitched up by a jammed sewing machine and his woollen mini-skirt failed to meet the exacting standards of judges Patrick Grant and Esme Young. Now, it all kicks off for the 11 remaining needleworkers — yes, it’s sports week. Some of the contestants know their way around a track, but this is unfamiliar territory for most of them — and Brogan, we’re quite sure that shopping for fabric doesn’t count as a sport. The pattern challenge is a Sewing Bee first: shoes! A robust and wearable high-top trainer, to be precise. Presenter Sara Pascoe (pictured) should be a good judge of this task as her husband has 200 pairs at home. The needleworkers will need to tackle some unfamiliar techniques, such as punching eyelets and stitching soles — and what’s more, they need to do all that twice and produce a perfectly matched pair if they’re to score maximum points. Next, they have just 90 minutes to transform an old netball kit, and finally, for the made-to-measure challenge, they need to create a jacket inspired by their sporting hero. So, once the final whistle has been blown, who will have pride of place at the top of the podium, and who will be facing relegation?
