UNITED VOW TO HELP INJURED STAR McNULTY

- BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

DUNDEE UNITED striker Marc McNulty faces an uncertain future after being ruled out for the remainder of the season. The 29-year-old, who is a free agent at the end of the month, faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury. The on-loan Reading forward suffered the injury in a collision with team-mate Liam Smith during last Saturday’s 1-0 home win against Motherwell. United boss Tam Courts has pledged to help McNulty even though he will no longer be a contracted player. ‘We only got the results on Thursday and, although we don’t know the full extent, it’s safe to say his season is over,’ said Courts. ‘I don’t want to speculate too much but it looks like he will be out for a period of time. ‘It’s bad news for him on a personal level but we will do everything we can for him. ‘He is someone we have a lot of time and respect for. We would support any player, anyway, but we will certainly provide facilities for him. ‘I don’t know the level of conversation that was had between (Dundee United sporting director) Tony Asghar and Marc’s agent about a new contract. ‘The key thing for us is ensuring we help to recuperate him and get him back to full fitness. We will look after him.’ Dundee United are in action at Ibrox on Sunday looking for a win that would secure European football. But Courts does not expect to face a Rangers side fatigued by last night’s Europa League semi-final second leg against RB Leipzig. ‘Their recent Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic proved that,’ he said. ‘Rangers played on the Thursday night and Celtic didn’t but, going into extratime at Hampden, Rangers still finished the stronger team. ‘When you look at the teams Rangers have knocked out, it is a credit to them and Scottish football. But domestic football can be different. ‘Rangers beat Borussia Dortmund then came to Tannadice and it was a draw.’
