Blow for FM as majority say no to divisive referendum next year

NICOLA Sturgeon’s plan to force the country into a second independen­ce referendum next year has been dealt a blow after a poll showed fewer than a third of Scots want another divisive vote.

new research revealed a vast majority oppose the idea of a repeat Scexit vote by the end of 2023, with only 29 per cent in favour of the timetable.

It comes as even her party’s own deputy leader at Westminste­r could not bring herself to say there would definitely be a rerun of the 2014 referendum by then.

Kirsten oswald was challenged three times during an interview to say if she genuinely thought Scots would have voted again on Scottish independen­ce before the end of next year, but failed to give a straight answer.

Instead, she claimed the country was ‘on the move towards the referendum’ and added: ‘I do look forward to things cranking up in terms of that conversati­on.’

The poll, carried out by Survation between April 19 and May 3 for the campaign group Scotland in Union, questioned 1,050 Scottish residents aged 16 or over.

They were asked if another referendum should be held before the end of next year and 60 per cent said it should not, while 11 per cent were undecided. More than a third of SnP voters at last year’s Holyrood election (36 per cent) even believe there should not be
