Passengers face days of chaos after train derails

- By Joe Hutchison

TRAVELLERS face days of disruption after a train derailment at the weekend.

The train, which was not in service at the time, came off the track at Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, on Friday evening.

It was reported to have been travelling at low speed and there were no injuries.

But an emergency timetable has been implemented after the line in the area was closed.

Engineers were on site working to get the train back on the track and assess the scale of the damage. Yesterday, Network Rail shared some images of what it described as a complex operation.

A spokesman said: ‘The derailment has caused significant damage to the track and work will need to be carried out to replace rails, sleepers and signalling equipment before we reopen the line.’

ScotRail’s service delivery director David Simpson said that staff were working ‘round the clock’ to get services back to normal as quickly as possible. But he added: ‘We are expecting some disruption into the working week.’
