Wonder try for Scots target Arundell

- By ALEX BYWATER

GREGOR TOWNSEND’S bid to persuade Henry Arundell to switch allegiance to Scotland looks set to hit the buffers after the 19-year-old scored a wonder try for London Irish. Sportsmail understands that England head coach Eddie Jones has already made contact with the talented youngster ahead of this summer’s tour of Australia in order to keep Scottish and Welsh interest at bay.

Arundell sent his latest message of intent to Jones after he raced 114 yards for an outrageous length-of-thefield effort in yesterday’s 19-18 defeat to Toulon in the quarterfinals of the Challenge Cup. With his team 19-13 down in the 74th minute at the Stade Felix Mayol, the full-back picked up possession just a metre off his own line. He proceeded to show a superb turn of foot to leave attempted tacklers in his wake. Arundell then stood up the final two French defenders to finish in the corner. The only shame was that it came in a losing cause. ‘We weren’t surprised because we know what’s possible with him,’ head coach Les Kiss said of Arundell’s try. Toulon will host Saracens in the semi-finals.
