A MAN in priest’s clothing tried to lunge at the Pope with a bayonet in Portugal last night. Shouting anti-Papal slogans, he was tackled by guards and led away. It was almost exactly a year since the assassinat­ion attempt on Pope John Paul in Rome.

RICHARD MADELEy, 66. The Essex-born broadcaste­r found fame on This Morning as one half of Richard and Judy. He now presents Good Morning Britain without his wife. He says: ‘I like being on telly, Judy didn’t.’ Madeley once told former U.S. president Bill Clinton he empathised with his impeachmen­t due to his own arrest for forgetting to pay for items including champagne at Tesco, adding: ‘Unlike you, I knew I was innocent.’

FRANCES BARBER, 64. The actress from Wolverhamp­ton starred in Doctor Who and Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool. When then-boyfriend, actor Neil Pearson, tried to drive off after a row, she lay naked on the road to stop him. ‘Unfortunat­ely, it was a cul-de-sac and all the neighbours were looking.’ When she tore a ligament in each knee after accidents on her bike and a horse, her friend Ian McKellen became her live-in carer.

BORN ON THIS DAY

RITCHIE VALENS (1941-1959). The American guitarist had hits with Donna and La Bamba. He was 17, and being hailed as ‘the next Elvis Presley’, when he died in the plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper, on what is known as The Day The Music Died (due to Don McLean song American Pie).

CARoLyN FRANKLIN (1944-1988). The U.S. singer-songwriter was eclipsed by her sister, ‘Queen of Soul’ Aretha Franklin — for whom she composed hits Angel and Ain’t No Way. She arranged Take Another Little Piece of My Heart for another sister, Erma. She said of Aretha: ‘People won’t let me out of her shadow.’ Later, she studied law, but developed breast cancer. Her degree was awarded on her deathbed.
